I use a Garmin handheld unit when I photograph. I want to enter that info into the iptc or whatever field contains it. where is this field and how can I access it? thanks.

For some reason the didn't work. I think the link is:
http://www.geosetter.de/en/

GPS data is part of EXIF rather than IPTC or EXIF and as such is normally added directly using a camera with GPS capability. To add that data manually into EXIF is a bit more tricky. GPS data can't currently be entered directly into EXIF from IMatch in fact not many applications can do anything much to EXIF. If you open the IMatch help and type GPS into the index you'll find a couple of pages on the subject.

I believe you can use a command line program like EXIFTool to add the data or more simply using the GeoSetter application jch2103 pointed at.

Regards

Carl

There is also a small script which ships which IMatch (Scripting menu > Scripts > GPS and Geo-coding > Set GPS coordinates which allows you to enter GPS data for your images.

The script expects that you have ExifTool.exe installed (see: http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/ download the Windows Executable).

Not the maximum comfort, but working quite well.

Other users have written scripts which import track lists, way point files etc. directly in the images. Just visit the photools.com Wiki and enter the search word GPS to find scripts and info related to GPS.

If you use Breeze Downloader Pro to copy your images from the camera/cardreader to your PC, then you can tell it to automatically add GPS data from GPX files when the images are copied. That's the way I do it. I let my Garmin log my trip, then, before downloading the images, I transfer the track log to the PC, convert to .GPX and then transfer the images with Downloader Pro. So all the GPS information is already there when the pictures get to my PC.

GeoSetter has two big advantages (plus it is free!):

1)it writes the geotag into the right place in the Exif AND in the raw (works fine with NEF)

2) if your Garmin was down at some place you can pick the location on a googlemap that opens in GeoSetter and write it straight away into the Exif of the raw.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I think the following is still on-topic.....
I also use Downloader Pro to ingest images to my PC. It nicely creates xmp sidecar files with the GPS coordinates for each image during the downloading process.
My out of camera original images are in raw format, so I have to process these raw files to arrive at JPG files.
On my system the derived JPG files are stored in a different folder hierarchy, which means that the geotag information is not readily available for the derived files.
I am just wondering if there is a way to link the geotag information from the raw xmp sidecars to the derived jpg files. A script could possibly do that, but I have not found something like that yet on the wiki. My scripting skills are not developed enough to write one myself, but that may have to change when there is no alternative scared

I think an easy option maybe to use a script like Ferdinand's Image Synchornization script to synchronize the xmp (or any other information) for the derived jpg with the raw file's xmp. The only potential drawback is that method will copy all the xmp information not just the GeoTag, and it won't put the GeoTag information into the EXIF if the RAW file doesn't have it.

I am a happy user of Ferdinand's synchronisation script.
However, it can not copy the geotag info from an xmp sidecar to a derived JPG. We have been discussing this some time ago in this topic. So actually I am looking for an other solution, if that does not exist I may have to hack into Ferdinand's script to add this capability. Given my scripting skills and the complexity of Ferdinand's script it is not something I am really looking forward to scared
Another option is of course to wait for IMatch NG. As this is a version aspect it may be solved there by design.....

hi Mario and everybody,

thanks for all the suggestions. I noticed when looking at the metadata there are some under "user1 which seem like they could contain geo data. it says "geocoding and gps data" and "locate in google maps". are they meant for that?
