It's good to have as much input and idees on this versioniong concept as possible.

Perhaps this would work for you:

You can have categories in the Versions category, eg. Versions.Raw or Versions.Web. Only problem is that you can't find all the images from lets say Holiday 2005 in Versions.Web. But this could easily be scripted, eg. a script that bookmarks the images in Versions.Web that have a Master in a selection in the Main category. This is the price you pay to have the main thumb dbase clean from versions and the filter not "wasted" for versioning.
