Actually my black bar indicates a Main image that HAS version(s) (I call it a Master)

Some of the categories you mention can easily be mimicked by a simple search or filter. I personally wouldn't use a category for that.

Not allways. Some versions are crops from the main image, and can be visually quite dissimilar. The DateTimeOriginal variable is a pretty reliable "connector" for the versions.
