I played a little with AutoIt, the program Alessandro used to make VersionFinder work.
I have included a modified VersionFinder script, that can use DateTimeOriginal or the Filename to do a search. On DTOrg it works as the original VersionFinder, on FileName it does a search on Filename, using simple search.
In the VersionFinderMOD.bas script you can easily change on what part of the filename the search is done.
My filenames look like 20060919_1235_DSCN1234.jpg
Using the left 22 characters gives all versions and different fileformats.

Changing the Master_Version manager script will be a bit more work
