One simple solution is to change the DateTimeOriginal one second higher (or lower) to distinguish different sets within the same second.

What filenames does the 20D create when on rapid fire? Normal sequence numbers?
In that case VersionFinder on filenames would work as far as I can see now.

The VersionFinderMOD works like a charm on filenames with identical DateTimeOriginal, thank you!

Adjusting DateTimeOriginal is an option, but I think it has 2 drawbacks:
1. it should be done before the image is edited and versions are created, as the versions will inherit the DTO of the master at edit-time. So it should be done before the 'problem' actually manifests. Either that or the DTO of a master and all it's versions has to be changed after editing.
2. I have all my original images, as soon as they are transferred to the computer, marked as 'read only', just to prevent an image editor from overwriting the original image. Adjusting the DTO would require to toggle this attibute temporarily. Of course it is possible, but it is something I would like to avoid.

But, as VersionFinderMOD works OK on files with identical DTO stamps but different file names, there is no problem left with this script.
